Cartridge World

Executive Chairman

Wolseley sold its investment in Cartridge World to an entity linked to a key supplier in the printer aftermarket, China based Suzhou Goldengreen Technologies, in June 2015.

Cartridge World is the global leader in office and home printer sales, service and replacement ink and toner cartridges with 1200 franchised outlets in more than 50 countries. In this $80B market, Cartridge World provides a cost effective printing solution to businesses and homes by supplying ink and toner cartridge which are engineered and manufactured to match the quality of the printer they are intended for.

In its period of ownership Wolseley adapted the business model to stay ahead of the technological changes in the sector. As the range of printer models multiplied the ability of single stores to successfully remanufacturer every product was challenged. So Cartridge World evolved from in-store to third party engineered cartridge supply. This allowed in-store resources to transition to market facing roles, in particular to selling printing and printer services to B2B clients. Franchisees that adapted to the new model enjoyed consistent double digit like-for-like sales growth.

The natural next stage for the business was for the supply chain to be fully integrated with the retail presence which was the investment thesis for the new owner, a supplier to the aftermarket. The new owner was able to service a large part of the $100M network spend on printer suppliers and own a Western distribution channel for its other products.

Regional management of Cartridge World was coordinated by Executive Chairman Rod Young. Rod is one of the world’s leading franchise executives and founder of the franchise consulting and legal firm, DC Strategy.

Wolseley was represented on the Cartridge World Board by Angus Stuart(Director); and Mark Richardson (Director).
